The Indiana State Lottery
The Indiana State Lottery is officially referred to by its nickname, The Hoosier Lottery and is the only state in the US known by a nickname. Run by the state’s government and a member of the Multi-State Lottery the Hoosier Lotto includes several games including Mega Millions, Powerball, Hoosier Lotto, Daily3 DAY, Daily3 EVE, Daily4 DAY, Daily4 EVE, Cash 5, and Mix and Match.
The modern incarnation of the Hoosier Lottery was created in 1988 when voters approved to pass a constitutional amendment to left the ban on lottery style games and in 1989 the first scratch-off game went on sale. Lotto Cash, the first online game followed in 1990.
In November 2007 Retired steel worker Peter Gilbert of East Chicago, Indiana won the Hoosier Lotto’s largest ever jackpot of $54.5 million. Funding from the Hoosier Lottery is partly used to support the pension funds for retired Indiana firefighters, police and teachers.
